Chapter Nine
I think Amy was surprised by the world outside the city.
She’d pored over her picture books, so she knew more things existed than broken streets and crumbling buildings. She’d envisioned dream worlds made of green trees and grasses. That’s why the Cat now carried her meager plant on board. But her reality had never included vistas beyond the nearest alley nor heights without broken spires puncturing the sky. She’d never seen mountains in the distance nor trails without great chunks of crumbled cement littering her path.
Amy was a city girl, even if that city was an apocalyptic ruin.
“I’ve never been able to look so far,” she said, explaining her new reality.
At some point, she asked me to carry her weapon.
“I’m not feeling any shivers,” she said.
