Chapter Five

That night, I dreamed.

Electric sheep were not involved.

We are not designed to dream, nor am I convinced that my dreaming is the same as Amy’s. I’m pretty sure it’s not. Then again, what I don’t understand about the biological psyche would fill a book. I came to dreaming on my own. There seems to be something in my programming that seeks connection with human beings, possibly due to my tri-fold prime directives or several years spent with Amy.

Whatever my source of motivation, one evening long past, I tinkered with my normal shut-down mode to allow for a few internal variations.

I set my alertness level to extremely low. This put me in a state similar to people in suspended animation. My responses became significantly muted and were necessarily automated. It’s a strange mode, considering I’m usually hyper-alert compared to the few humans I’ve encountered.
